Michigan Division - South

Circa 1896-1900
Greensburg DepotPostcard photo of the Greensburg Indiana Depot about 1900
Lawrence Baggerly Collection.

Maurice Lewman says: "In the picture of the depot at Greensburg, the passenger train is a Michigan Divison train. At the left edge of the picture behind the coach was the water plug where we stopped to take water southbound. Am I glad to see those two water towers. They were there until the steam left. The east leg of the wye passed by them. The train is headed north."

1906-1916 - Carthage Station
These two photos of the station a Carthage are all that we have representing it when it was in use. Unfortunately, neither is very good. The right hand photo does show a hand powered hand car to the right center along with a locomotive and what would appear to be two people on the platform. Also, notice the lower quadrant semaphore.

Using the right hand photo as a reference:
The timeframe of this picture would be between 1906 and 1916. The Section House was later moved north and west. The east track where the engine is sitting was later stubbed north of the street crossing. The freight house later burned and the depot was torn down in the late 60s or early 70s. The engine is a Richmond locomotive (2-6-0?) built about 1895. The tower behind the engine could possibly be the boom on the wreck crane (Big Hook), The water pumps on the south side of the depot was used until the depot was desttroyed. All of the houses were still standing in 1993. My father, Newell Lewman, told me about the little engine they used. - M.E.L.

1915 - Train 75
Train 75 work order dated September 19, 1915. Number 75 was a train on the Michigan Division. It was a third class train from South Anderson to Jeffersonville Indiana. In addition to the 'schedule' on the page, it would meet 34 at Knightstown, 56 at Carthage, pass 57 at Rushville, meet 94 at North Vernon and 64 at North Town which was the entrance to Jeffersonville Yard.

1954 - NYC 3029
South Anderson May 10, 1954 on the South Wye, Engine 3029 on #78 arriving at South Anderson hid a switch that had been unlatched. Moving at 15 mph, the end came for a blueprint engine.

3029 never returned to service (I have other shots of the derailment, but they are very poor.)

1954 - NYC 1473
NYC H5 2-8-2 Mikado.
The South Anderson-Greensburg local, running northbound at Grant City road at about 25 to 35 mph, on 90 pound rail. This train was running extra as signified by the (dirty) white flags. Notice the screen leaning behind the stack. The fireman would put the screen over the stack at Carthage, North Anderson and Wabash. Paper mills were switched at all three locations. The purpose of the screen was to break up any hot coals that might come out of the stack. Notice the two compound air pumps above the pilot. Normally, there was one behind the main reservoir above the rear drivers. Engineer, R.C. "Smoke" Hoover. Fireman, Bill Rose.

(Note: Maurice's son Larry told me that Maurice had spotted this loco running north and knew that he could get ahead of it to get a good picture. He got into position and waited until the train was in sight and then triggered his camera a moment too soon to catch the tender. Sounds like something that I'd do. Been there, done that. - rph )

George Hogg is on the engine. Charles Sparks – (Conductor) is to the right on the middle ground and Jim Hunt (Switchman) is to the far right on the ground. Looking west, the little building switchman shanty and car repair. The coal dock covered three tracks and a fourth track ran on the right side. Scales were to the left. The train is sitting on #2, the eastbound track.

The date is in question. With a new roof being installed and the paint looking like NYC instead of Big Four, it could be around 1925. The sign on the corner of the building says "Western Union Telegraph and Cable Office".

Maurice worked the Michigan Division from 1947-1981. He then worked on the Bee Line from 1981-1992. From 1947 until august 1950, he worked on the section at Shirley and Markleville. In 1950 he started firing on steam and then on through the diesels. Maurice said, "I had the pleasure of working with C. C. Staley and Ron Buser many times."
