M.E. Lewman says "The fireman standing in the gangway is R. D. Kelly . The conductor looking at the ground is Alex Thomson . We called him cinder pit because the cinder pit at Wabash was exposed on one side of the engine and if you went down the wrong side you would fall in the pit . Alex had one to many and fell in the pit . It was only 8 ' square and 3' deep ."
